Basic description

  • The version described here is the one published by Mahoney and Barthel in 1965.
  • Many modified versions of the Barthel Index exist. For example, the Stroke Center version but the author don’t recognize this version as valid and they don’t want the users to use it.

Other versions of the Barthel Index:

  • 10-item version with total score ranging from 0 to 20 (Collin and Wade, 1988)
  • 15-item version with four-point response scales (Granger et al, 1979; Fortinsky et al, 1981)
